The "NGI / LGI Infrastructure Services" Work package (WP4) aims at the establishment of a self-sustainable grid infrastructure in Latin America. By federating computing and storage resources from partner institutions across Latin America and European areas, the Virtual Communities’ research can be made more efficient. Through the establishment of the Operations Centres at different organisational levels, WP4 also contributes to operation-related knowledge dissemination, fostering a long-term  operation.

The organisation of WP4 is divided into three Tasks:

TWP4.1: Coordination of the Work Package (led by UFRJ)
It coordinates the activity and its interaction with other activities, inside and outside GISELA. This activity encompasses the integration with other Grid entities (eg. EGI and EMI) that benefits the GISELA infrastructure. Also, cross-WP activities are handled here (eg. dealing with gLite user requirements or harmonising the different middlewares support).

TWP4.2  Grid-support Services ( led by UFRJ)
It  maintains systems that, although not directly Grid-related, provide invaluable operational support. This activity handles the usage, support, implementation and deployment (where necessary) of services such as ticket systems, Resource Centre databases and mailing lists, to cite a few.

TWP4.3 Grid Operation ( led by UFRJ)
It  supports  Grid services, deploying core Grid systems and being in charge of the operation of the infrastructure. This is perhaps the most important WP4 activity, covering Resource Centre integration, Regional Centres (GOCs) establishment and support, as well as the proper infrastructure oversight.

One should refer to the IGALC website for information on how to access or federate resources into the GISELA infrastructure.

The role of the "User Communities Support" Work Package (WP3) is to provide baseline and  specialised support and training to all Grid users of the GISELA community. WP3 is also working  as a gateway between the GISELA supported Virtual Research Communities (VRC) and international initiatives, such as the European Grid Initiative (EGI).

The support activities provided by WP3 can be summarised as follows:

  • Computing resource operation support – offer specific training on operation of grid resource centre;
  • Middleware service development – develop a middleware customisation, offering or service to cope with the requirements of a specific Research community;
  • Digital identity management – educate community users on how to manage Grid certificates and digital identity;
  • Grid technology induction – induce research communities to use grid technologies through short tutorials aiming at simple job submission, application demonstration and grid service installation;
  • Grid enabling application support – prepare a community application, software or tool to use and profit from a grid enabled infrastructure;
  • Application tutorial – instruct community users on how to use a grid-enabled application.

Moreover WP3 provides GISELA users with an innovative tool allowing scientists to submit applications on the e-Infrastructure through a normal Web browser, the GISELA Science Gateway.

The GISELA SG allows users to fully exploit the e-Infrastructure capabilities through a normal Web browser. Users can obtain access to the Science Gateway using a pair username/password (provided by an Identity Federation) and submit applications simply filling a Web form.

All people with a valid account on a supported Identity Federation could exploit Science Gateway services and functionalities!

The main functionalities just available in the GISELA Science Gateway are the following:

And... this is only the first step. We are working to create more VRC specialized sections and to increase our application portfolio with other high impact applications!

WP3 Structure

The "User Communities Support" Work Package (WP3) is subdivided into three (3) tasks:

  • TWP3.1: Coordination of the Activity (Led by INFN): This task deals with the overall WP3 coordination.
  •  TWP3.2: Virtual Research Community Support (Led by Clara): This task is in charge of identifying synergies among different Research Groups and to foster collaboration among them. TWP3.2 will also interface the users of the GISELA´s Grid infrastructure with the EGI Application Support Services.
  • TWP3.3: Validation, Documentation and Training (Led by CIEMAT): This task is in charge of validating the infrastructure services provides by WP4 and the Application-related and Infrastructure-related Grid Services developed by WP6.
